This artwork depicts Spinifex which is a type of grass that grows in deserts of central Australia.  This grass consists of a wax like substance which is extracted by burning the Spinifex.  This wax is initially soft and it can be shaped into various weapons such as stone axes, knives spear-heads or boomerangs.  When the wax solidifies, it gets hard like cement and weapons made out of it become very strong and effective.

Description

About the Artist:

Rex was born in Alice springs on July 1963. From childhood he wanted to be an artist. As a child, he considered Albert Namatjira as his idol. He would sit in the Todd Creek with him and his son Oscar and watch them paint. He  was also inspired by his elder brother, Reg Sultan, who was an established artist at that time.

Rex's  totem is the Rain-Maker, inherited from his maternal grandfather, which features in many of his  works, along with symbolism, dreamtime stories and bush tucker. He also does the traditional ‘dot painting’ style, and  also enjoys  doing landscapes, and the more modern abstract style that has become popular with many galleries.
