The type of body painting varies between tribes and regions of Australia. Awelye is the Aboriginal name of body painting. Body painting, decoration and personal adornment traditionally carry deep spiritual significance to Aboriginal people. In most cases body painting must conform to respected social and historical patterns. People are not free to change their appearance. A get-together function or corroboree does not receive the green light until elders are satisfied that the participants are capable of fulfilling their obligations.
